About the music...

So, let’s start with the important things. The Festival is all about Australian music – if you could program the Festival, what bands would you most want to see? What’s your ideal line up?

The Cat Empire a few years ago still stands as one of the greatest gigs i've ever been to. Jackson Jackson and the Angels were pretty fantastic this year .Aside from that True Live, De Jah Groove, Bliss N' Esso, Yeah Yeah Yeahs all produce the kind of music that makes dancing on the foreshore a load of fun.

I think that the St. Kilda Festival should be about showcasing local talent, giving stage space to young, underexposed bands. I can't see the point of putting mega bands on at what is supposed to be a local festival. Go for good, local bands that need a break. I discovered a number of local bands at St. Kilda Festivals past that went on to become favourites of mine.

I have been a St Kilda Festival resident for many years now and I really like the event. I'm probably getting a little old to enjoy all of the acts but I enjoy seeing many other people enjoying the acts and beleive the music is a fantastic way to showcase the great mix of culture we celebrate in St Kilda every day of the year.

The stuff that's on all during the week and on the big festival day is always good fun. I love wandering down from my house in St Kilda East to discover all these new little up and coming acts in the space of a week.

In terms of the main big day, I agree it would be awesome if there was some more electronic music and I don't mean trancey/housey stuff or ah, 'duff duff' (as some I think other person put it - strange!!). Like in that bit near the beach where Paris Wells was last year (hope you know where I mean). There were some cool boys in there spinning some excellent tracks. Very chilled out and nice for a Sunday. I think my friends and I hardly moved from there all day!

As a local resident, I feel the festival has become too big. What is the purpose of the festival?

Who is it for? I don't believe the festival should be a vehicle for attracting visitors to St Kilda. The area has matured to such a degree that visitors will come anyway.

I am not sure that the festival needs to have big name acts anymore.

A series of localised smaller festivals aimed to provide opportunities for the residents to come together would be better.

The locals can come along to the Festival as it is. Don't they run a program called Live N Local the week prior to the big day? I think you will find that it’s exactly what you have asked for above? I think you need to dig a bit deeper into what is on offer. Why can't local St Kilda people also check out what is happening on the Sunday? I know I do and I love it!

Have you ever heard of St Kilda Film Festival? It's the most prestigious short film festival in the country. Based right in St Kilda, on Fitzroy Street and welcomes locals and I believe run by council.

I'd say that's two major nods to the arts. Music - check! Film - check! I'm pretty sure Gasworks Arts Park in Port Melbourne is something to do with council too. Sounds very much like you can't see the forest for the trees, David.

I'm a bit out of touch to recommend bands, which is why I haven't, but surely the point here is to have a wide variety of music styles and levels of popularity so as to help create an audience. I always go, and I just love it as a showcase - I get to see bands that I wouldn't usually consider.

I think there needs to be a mix of emerging and established artists. The only way an emerging artist is going to get more well known is by exposure at these types of festivals. Of course, the music should fit into the aesthetic of the festival. There could be opportunities to form mentor type relationships between establish and emerging for the week leading up to the festival.

I would like to see Silverchair perform - would be awesome to see some live music with their symphony backing.

Australian music is not Aussies copying Americans which is common here. US rap is crap for example. The band must be fresh, with a good sound and above all they must be entertaining

The music at the St Kilda Festival is great; I always find something I like across the different stages. One of my fav stages in the new music stage, I do love seeing the new acts that St Kilda Fest bring to light. But one of my best memories to date is the Hoodoo Gurus on the mains stage a couple of years ago! There were young kids and older adults all singing along together, it really was something else and showed different generations coming together in true community spirit. Music is great for that, boundaries are lifted and people come together. This is what I love about St Kilda Festival; it really is a festival for the people.

I love St Kilda Festival, and I just wanted to comment on what seems to be a recurring opinion (particularly amongst the "residents" although I live in the area as well) - that the festival should be about local music.

As far as I can see, it IS about local music! There's a whole week of it during the local week before the festival day. I went along to some of it at the last st kilda festival, and there were lots of "young underexposed bands" as someone put it, playing in all these venues in st kilda! it was awesome!

What I really like and admire about St Kilda Festival is that it is free, yet still manages to put on some big name acts. I can't afford to go to every big festival each year like big day out, and some people cant go to any, yet St KIlda Festival gives them the chance to see some major acts (alongside smaller ones) and experience the atmosphere of a major festival without the cost normally attached. I think this is so amazing and council should be congratulated for putting this on.

And for all you residents complaining that you're ratepayers and you're paying for the festival - this should be a positive thing! you're giving so many people the opportunity to see some great bands in a free, safe environment in the best venue melbourne has to offer. I know that would make me proud.

To be true to its vision of showcasing emerging Australian musicians, in particular local talent, the Sunday Festival program should be expanded to include a range of music genres to encompass a wider and more diverse audience, families and older age groups. Why not showcase emerging artists in classical or opera? I would like to see more acoustic music and more stages around the streets, especially in Acland and Fitzroy. It’s a shame the emerging musician stage is tucked away in Belford Street. Unless you stop right in front you cannot enjoy the sound elsewhere in Acland Street. The stages used to be at each end of the street and the cafes and bars brought tables out on the road. That way you could sit, eat, drink and enjoy the music. Now the main activity is drinking and the street becomes quite ugly as the day progresses.

I would love to see this event evolve into an arts festival, presenting a program of music, visual arts, theatre, dance etc. This could be primarily an outdoor and free program that presents work by renounded performance arts groups, music groups and visual artists.

Although I enjoy the festival's music program I am unsure why this has grown to be an event based primarily on music performance. This event is a great oportunity to showcase St Kilda and City of Port Phillip creative professionals. The myraid of local artists who live/work in the area should be provided with the oportunity to present their own work and to also work within the community to produce creative work made for and by City of Port Phillip residents. I understand that there are existing programs such as "live and local" that serve to include local musicians, but I believe that the local input should be greatly increased.

This idea to create a cross-arts festival program does not preclude performances by chart topping bands who play on a beach stage to a vast audience. My desire is to simply readress the balance of the festival, creating an event that is relevant to and inclusive of locals as well as general audience.

It would be interesting to see how many locals are still in the arts as I feel the numbers are not what they were when the festival started. Every time I walk into the Linden Gallery, usually monthly, it is usually empty and most of the "art" is rubbish too. I would sell the Linden building which is currently owner by ratepayer or turn it into a proper community facility; perhaps a museum. I agree with most of you comment however.

When did the festival change to be only about music? It never used to be. And certainly not just another 'big day out.' It used to be a multi cultural festival, with different types of music, including folk, country, jazz, etc. It also had dance performances and fun activities like the bed races on the upper esplanade. Then finishing with fire works.

St Kilda Festival is an (the) outdoor (free) music festival in Australia. The festival should have more going on through the week prior to the BIG Sunday. Live'n Local is ok, but it was never meant to be the only thing happening during the week. It needs to be developed further and there should be outdoor stages set up for the week with music programmed every day on outdoor stages in locations such as O'Donnell Gardens, Catani Gardens, the Beach and maybe St Kilda Botanical Gardens. This should be aimed at the population of the City of Port Phillip.
